Jan Cao is a Ph.D student in the Program of German Literature and Critical Thoughts at Northwestern University. Her current interests include critical theory, aesthetics, contemporary German-language migrant literature, and game studies. She is spending the academic year 2017-18 in Paris as a fellow of Northwestern's Paris Program in Critical Theory.
Tentatively titled "How to Enter an Artwork: the Aesthetics of Portal Pictures," her dissertation explores the aesthetic motif of "portals"—the type of image that invites its audience to enter it directly—and its reception in the works of Klages, Bloch, and Benjamin.
